Getting a Shower Filter is Worth Every Penny

Posted by Carson Bruner on

Showering is a fantastic form of self-care — but did you know that showering without a shower head filter can negatively affect your hair and skin? Shower heads filter out harsh chemicals and contaminants that would otherwise end up on your body. Here’s why getting a shower filter in your home is worth every penny:

Shower Filters Protect Your Hair

Who doesn’t want healthy hair? If you’re currently taking showers without a shower filter, you may unknowingly allow chemicals like chlorine, calcium, and magnesium to absorb into your hair. You could be using the best hair care products in 2022 (like Madi Bella's organic hair care products) but still not notice the benefits because your hair is exposed to damaging contaminants. Here are some other elements that are thankfully filtered out by shower filters:

  • Bacteria
  • Lead
  • Mercury
  • Iron
  • Fluoride
  • Sulfur odor
  • Water-soluble heavy metals

These chemicals are notorious for drying out hair — causing dandruff, hair loss, and hair damage. Celebrity hairstylist Laura Polko says, “The filter removes chemicals that can be harmful to your hair and scalp. If your hair feels dry, lifeless, and brittle regardless of product performance —moisturizing, repairing, strengthening, etc.— it may be time to try a shower head filter!”

Using a shower head filter makes hair feel healthier and a lot less frizzy because the hair's natural oils can actually thrive. If you have colored hair (including highlights), showering without a filter will cause the color to fade more quickly. Water showers are worth every penny because you’ll save money by not needing to visit the salon so frequently!

Shower Filters Protect Your Skin, Too!

As you can probably imagine, the contaminants listed above are not suitable for our skin either. You’ve finally found one of the main culprits to your dry skin — no shower filter! Showering without a shower filter dries out your skin and contributes to acne.

Shower filters help hydrate the skin by allowing sebum to do what it’s supposed to naturally (lubricate the skin, transport antioxidants, trigger anti-inflammatory functions, and provide natural antibacterial activity). Your skin has room to naturally protect itself when it's not unnecessarily being coated by mineral deposits from your shower water!

Do You Have Hard Water in Your Area?

We recommend that everyone get a shower filter to protect their skin and hair, but it’s especially important if you have hard water. What is hard water, you ask? It’s a type of water that has high mineral content. Essentially, it has high levels of the minerals listed above that are not good for your hair or skin.

Hard water is determined by geographical location. If you live in the United States, you can find out the hardness of your water using this map. (Hint: 85% of people in the U.S. have hard water in their homes).

Self-care is an ongoing process of learning and adapting, so we encourage you to get a shower filter if you don’t have one. Your hair and skin will thank you for it (and you can thank us later).

Love,

Madi Bella
